This FAQ page is designed to answer the most common questions homeowners ask about ACRYLITE® Patio Covers and our services.  If you have questions that aren’t covered here, please contact us – we’re happy to help!

What is an ACRYLITE® Patio Cover?

An ACRYLITE® patio cover is a durable patio roofing system made from high-impact, translucent acrylic sheets paired with an aluminum frame. ACRYLITE® sheets deliver superior performance over canvas, metal, or glass systems and are more durable and weather-resistant than polycarbonate or fiberglass covers. The acrylic roofing panels are multi-walled for rigidity and formulated with an industry-leading polymer that provides excellent light diffusion, UV protectio,n and durability.  When combined with powder-coated aluminum framing, an ACRYLITE® cover creates a heavy-duty, yet elegant, patio roof that lets light in while keeping rain and debris out.

What Makes ACRYLITE® Acrylic Patio Covers So Special?

  • Light-transmitting yet heat-blocking

Multi-wall ACRYLITE® panels allow natural daylight into your patio while blocking 100% of ultraviolet (UV) rays and up to 75% of the sun’s heat by using infrared (IR) light reflecting technology. Unlike metal roofs, acrylic doesn’t darken the space; you can still see the sky and even the stars through the clear panels.

  • Built to withstand Northwest weather

The panels are 5/8 inches thick and use a patented no-drip, multi-wall design that channels condensation away from your living space.  They’re engineered to handle heavy snow loads, high winds, and hail, with Limited Lifetime Warranty for non-yellowing guarantee and 10-year hail impact warranty.

  • Low-maintenance and long-lasting

Unlike wood or polycarbonate, acrylic never needs staining or painting and cleans easily with a biodegradable multi-purpose cleaner and/or soap with water. Believe it or not we recommend the one created by Amway since it is biodegradable and has non-harsh chemicals. It works wonders on the panels when cleaning. CLICK here to check it out. In addition, the acrylic panels won’t discolor or deteriorate like fiberglass or other plastics and are backed by the longest warranties in the market.

  • Energy-efficient comfort

By softening harsh sunlight and blocking radiant heat, these covers keep your patio cooler on hot days while still allowing warmth on cool mornings. You get year-round comfort without sacrificing light.

  • Our covers include infrared (IR) energy technology

For example, the ACRYLITE® Heatstop high-impact multi-skin acrylic is an impact-modified PMMA polymer sheet that uses the reflect infrared (IR) energy to cut heat, insulate well, and withstand severe weather. The Heatstop IR reflective additive is integrated through the entire extruded profile – not just a surface coating – so performance lasts for the life of the panel.

How Does an Acrylic Patio Cover Compare To Wood or Polycarbonate Covers?

An ACRYLITE® patio cover is an investment that saves money over time.  Traditional wood covers typically cost $80–$105 per square foot, require regular staining or painting, and can warp or rot in our damp NW climate. Polycarbonate or fiberglass covers are cheaper but yellow and become brittle with UV exposure. ACRYLITE® covers, by contrast, cost about $55–$70 per square foot, resist yellowing for decades, and are virtually maintenance-free. Over a typical 16×12 ft patio, the installed price ranges from $10,500 to $13,500, which includes design and professional installation. We also have the ability to upgrade the cover with swapping out beams & posts with wood if you prefer. We can have the wood be natural, stained, or painted as well. In addition, many customers like to add decorative columns, deck railing (picket, cable, or glass), sunshades, enclosing the patio cover to make it a room or making the cover Free Standing are also options.

What Panel Styles Are Available?

Crown Patio Covers offers five ACRYLITE® panel options so you can customize the balance of light transmission and heat reduction for your patio.  All panels are multi-wall acrylic, block 100 % of UV rays, and are backed by the Limited Lifetime Warranty for non yellowing guarantee and 10-year hail warranty.  The approximate light-transmission and heat-blocking percentages are shown below:

How Long Does Installation Take?

Acrylic patio covers install faster than wood structures because the panels are prefabricated. For a typical patio (16’ wide x 12’ projection), installation is usually completed in 1 day, max 2 days. Larger or more complex designs may require additional time. We provide a detailed timeline during your design consultation and handle all engineering, permitting and inspections, if necessary.

How Durable are ACRYLITE® Acrylic Patio Covers?

ACRYLITE® panels are engineered to handle heavy snow loads, winds and hail, and the multi‑wall design prevents condensation from dripping onto your patio. The snow load is 25 lbs per square foot on 4’ span in rafters and goes up to 50 lbs. per square foot on 2’ span. The material is shatter‑resistant and will not yellow or degrade like other material. The 10 yr. hail warranty covers replacement if hail damages a panel. Aluminum framing adds strength without rusting or warping, and the powder‑coated finish resists fading.

Do I Need a Building Permit?

This is a tricky one since every city, county, jurisdictions and state is different. We will help you navigate this unknow territory. A lot of times you don’t need a permit if under 200 sq. feet. Also, there are different rules if the patio cover is attaching to the house versus a Free-Standing patio cover away from the home. Permit fees vary; industry sources note $500–$800 in Washington and $1,500 – $3,000 in Oregon. Then you have engineering costs on top of the city permits. In total, most projects cost an additional $3,000 – $5,000 for all the necessary permits and engineering.  Crown Patio Covers will help you determine the required permit and handle the application process for you depending on the scope of work. Our goal is to comply with all local building codes, so you get an amazing, beautiful cover that will stand the test of time.

How Much Maintenance is Required?

ACRYLITE® acrylic patio covers are remarkably low‑maintenance. The panels never need painting or staining and can be cleaned easily with a biodegradable multi-purpose cleaner and/or soap with water. Believe it or not we recommend the one created by Amway since it is biodegradable and has non harsh chemicals. It works wonders on the panels when cleaning, CLICK here to check it out. Aluminum frames resist rust and corrosion, so there’s no scraping or repainting. We recommend occasional cleaning to remove pollen and debris, especially after spring pollen season.

Can I Add Fans, Lighting or Heaters to My Patio Cover?

Absolutely. Our design team can incorporate electrical wiring for ceiling fans, pendant lighting, heaters or even televisions into your patio cover. For heat sources, we recommend natural‑gas or propane patio heaters pointed down away from the panels; open wood‑burning fire pits or chimney should not be used under acrylic covers due to fire risk and black smoke that can stain the panels. We can also add motorized screens or glass walls to enclose your patio. Proper ventilation is important to prevent moisture buildup.

Can I Enclose My Patio Cover to Create a Room?

Yes. Many of our customers choose to add sliding doors, windows, fix glass, or retractable sunshades to create an all-year-round space room. When enclosing, moisture management is critical to avoid condensation. We’ll recommend appropriate ventilation and drainage solutions.
